The general consensus is that having a baby boy or girl depends on the man more than on the woman. It is believed that there are two types of chromosomes, the X-chromosome and the Y chromosome. It is believed that the man carries both chromosomes but the woman carries just one of these two chromosomes. A boy is produced when different chromosomes from the man and woman meet and a girl is produced if the chromosomes from both man and woman are the same. ( ie X meets Y or X meets X). It is said that females carry only the X chromosome so the gender of a baby is largely dependent on whether the man releases an X or Y chromosome in his sperm. Consequently, through fertility calendar it is possible to predict when to have intercourse to conceive a boy or a girl.
The point in this is, it is known that the sperm carrying the X-chromosomes lives longer but swims slower than the Y-carrying sperm. The sperm that reaches the female egg first fertilizes the egg. Even though the sperm carrying the Y chromosome swims faster, it has a shorter life than the sperm carrying the X chromosome. Thus the Y sperm can swim faster it may not get to the egg before it dies.

Because the X carrying sperm lives longer, if you time yourself to have intercourse about say, three days before ovulation, chances are you will have a girl because by the time the egg is released in the ovulation process in three days time, the y sperms would have died, and the X sperms would have completed half of their journey toward the egg and getting it fertilized.
